Wines Around the World: Austria & Germany
April 9, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm$35
As Our Wines Around The World Wine-Tasting Tour Travels To The Mediterranean, We Visit The Countries Of Austria And Germany. Each Offers Distinct Wines And Different Terrains For Growing Grape Vines, Which Influences The Taste And Breadth Of The Wines.
Due to more favorable climatic conditions, most Austrian wine-growing regions are located in the eastern part of the country. However, you will find wine growing to a smaller extent throughout the rest of Austria as well. Austria is still a country of small family growers, and multinationals have yet to move in. There are more than 23 white varieties and 14 red grown in the country. At basic levels, it is reliably fresh, fruity, balanced and appetizing – unlike that other top white grape, Riesling, which is not at all good at making cheap wines. Reds? Well, they’ve survived their obligatory over-oaked phase and have come out fresher, riper and more assured.
German wine differs from wines of other countries — it’s light, lively and fruity, thanks to Germany’s unique climatic and geological conditions. The wine-growing regions of Germany are concentrated in the south and southwestern part of Germany, with the exceptions being Saale-Unstrut and Sachsen in the east. German wine-producing regions are among the most northerly wine regions in the world and straddle the border between the humid Gulf Stream climate of the west and the dry Continental climate of the east. The long growing season and moderate summer temperatures bring forth filigree wines that are relatively low in alcohol. The diversity of German wine stems from the many soil types and grape varieties and this diversity is reflected in Germany’s 13 wine-growing regions.
As we wind our way through these European countries, we will visit specific sub-regions and the wines that populate those sub-regions, culminating with a wine tasting & food pairing using a board of three: 1 meat, 1 cheese, and 1 fruit, and a flight of wines from Austria & Germany.
