More about our South African wines according to Wine Folly (winefolly.com)…
Syrah from South Africa is becoming popular due to its dark spiced fruit flavors with a chocolate-like richness. It’s important to note that since Syrah grows throughout South Africa, it has a wide range of styles.
There is a savory complexity to South African Cab. Imagine black pepper, bell pepper rounded out with currant, blackberry, and plum. South African Cabernet Sauvignon fits somewhere in between new world and old world; it’s savory, but without all the grit of a French Bordeaux Superieur.
The flavors of Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa are zesty, grapefruity and grassy, and usually around $10 a bottle.
The wine tasting on Tuesday, July 9th will feature the following three South African wines:
Tasting notes courtesy of wine-searcher.com…
Boekenhout Wolftrap Syrah
The nose entices with its abundance of ripe plums, blueberries, slight spiciness and notes of violets. Dark berry fruit follows through onto a juicy, vibrant mid-palate with svelte tannins and a silky texture. The wine shows exceptional balance with fresh, integrated acidity. Plummy fruit and spice lingers on the finish.
Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon
This delicious, crowd-pleasing Cabernet delivers serious bang for the buck! It exhibits ripe blackcurrant and dried herb characters on the nose, which are backed up with some spicy oak notes. The palate is smooth and soft, with beautiful ripe tannins and a long finish.
Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc
Made reductively in order to maximize the fruit personality of the vintage, the 2018 variety shows more marked fruit aromatics than usual, while maintaining the typical Southern Right balance of Old World minerality and length with hints of New World palate coverage and body. 2018 is a wine that favors origin expressive individuality, minerality and palate complexity ahead of pure, pungent varietal aroma. A significant percentage of fruit from clay-rich soil has added an intense mid-palate structural component and addition overall complexity to this wine.
